Sportsmanship Program
Since it’s creation in the fall of 2009 the youth sports sportsmanship program at St. Andrew’s Parks and Playground has recognized over fifty boys and girls who are good sports. Each season every team ages nine and above has the opportunity to select an individual from their team.
Each winner is given a Sportsmanship Medal and Certificate for their great display of sportsmanship. The medal is inscribed with such words as “Respect,” “Character,” “Humility,” “Integrity” and “Leadership”
In today’s society it seems that sportsmanship is now “under-encouraged.” Hopefully we are not beginning to see the decline or death of sportsmanship in youth sports. It seems as the skill level and competition increases the sportsmanship level decreases.
With that in mind we would like to share some criteria for the basis of the Youth Sportsmanship Award.
1. Tell everyone “good game” whether you have won or lost.
2. Cheer for your teammates whether you are winning or losing.
3. Applaud a good play whether it is on your team or the opponent’s team.
4. Helps a teammate or an opponent up after falling down.
5. No trash talking or taunting the opponent.
6. Listen to the coaches and follows their directions.
7. Does not make excuses for an error, or losing, blames a teammate, etc.
8. Learns the rules of the game to become more knowledgeable.
9. Accept and respects the game official’s calls and does not argue.
10. Tells the game officials “good game.”
11. Does not complain when he/she has to sit out.
12. Plays fair and does not cheat.
13. Helps keep the facility clean.
14. Does not fight.
15. Does not use profanity.
